Almost 41,000 people, or 7.35 percent of registered voters, have cast ballots for the March 4 primary, with six days to go before early voting ends. About 32,400 people, or about 6 percent of registered voters, voted early in 2004.
Democrats have largely led early voting this year because of the hotly contested presidential primary. Before too long, most of these animals will be sent to the auction market and then slaughtered, their meat destined for specialty groceries and supermarkets.
Whether for show or for the slaughterhouse, these goats most of them raised in the Hill Country are feeding the demands of a rapidly growing market. The result: A state long known for such big, muscular pursuits as oil and cattle has become the nation's leader in a smaller endeavor goat ranching. "All of a sudden, it became in vogue to have meat goats," said Rick Machen, a livestock specialist for the Texas AgriLife Extension Service, which is part of Texas University. The introduction in the mid-1990s of the South African Boer goat, a breed that is faster-growing and meatier than other goats as well as docile and good-looking, sparked the growth. Boer goat meat fetches good prices, while demand from Muslim and Latino shoppers, most in Chicago, New York and other big cities, has increased with U.S.
population growth. At the same time, parents have been giving their children the animals to raise and to show, teaching them responsibility in a fashion that is time-honored in this section of the country without the risks of injury that come with cattle. Brad Roeder, a 35-year-old rancher, said goats "were always a back-pasture deal." They were a way to perhaps supplement a rancher's income but not the primary animal on the property. But the Boer goat changed that, as did the growing Muslim market. Prices tend to spike before key Muslim holidays.
"Goats started bringing good money, and prices have been climbing nicely," he said. Roeder raises about 450 goats while also working as a state Agriculture Department marketing specialist. Watching the livestock show, he says that Boer goats took off about the time a government mohair subsidy from Angora goats was cut. What's more, because goats do not require the equipment and large ranches required by cattle, retirees and eVen suburbanites began to raise them and bring them to market. "Goats are good for small acreage," said Marvin Shur-ley, president of the American Meat Goat Association in Sonora. "It's a quicker turnover for your money." Texas, Shurley said, is the nation's leading goat state, with about 60 percent of the nation's herd. He said production is rising about 5 percent a year.
Since the mid-1990s, Machen said, Texas' goat herd has grown from about 400,000 to about 1.2 million. Besides demand at the meat market, goats have become an increasingly popular show animal. The agriculture show here in Hill Country is an important community event, especially for youths. "It's an awfully good parenting tool," said Ray Bolinger, an American Boer Goat Association judge. "It's easy for a child to say, 'Mom can you feed the dog But with a goat it means heading out to the barn and doing more work." A drug representative in the veterinary industry who lives in Austin, Bolinger bought his first goat for about $30,000 in 1994.
Now he has a herd of about two dozen that he breeds, shows and sells. He also keeps tabs on the meat market. "We've still got a way to go to convince most people that it's not too twangy and that they can eat it," Bolinger said. "Right now, it's still an ethnic marketplace. When that changes, watch out." Jersey City Police Chief Tom Comey said investigators traced a series of anonymous e-mails allegedly sent by Perez on Tuesday and Wednesday to the 19-year-old female roommate of her boyfriend. Perez met her boyfriend, 19, and a St. Peter's College freshman, online, Comey said. Police said there was no romantic relationship between the boyfriend and the roommate, who live hi an off-campus apartment. Comey said Perez was jealous.
Police declined to name the boyfriend or the roommate. Police said the roommate reported e-mail threats to authorities Tuesday, including one that referred to a meeting the roommate was to attend on campus Wednesday. "You cannot simply hit a send button and think that nothing's going to happen," Comey said.
